Established for over 100 years, Garston Farm Vets in Frome provides a comprehensive range of farm animal services for cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, alpacas & other exotic animals.

Our clients include large dairy & beef farms, organic farms, smallholdings and community farms. We care for animals in and around the Somerset & Wiltshire counties and are on-call 24 hours a day.

As well as on-farm services, our expert farm vets also provide training & advice on many aspects of farming, with a view to helping our clients improve animal welfare, production and business growth.

On-Farm Services

Routine & Adhoc farm visits from our expert team will help to keep your animals healthy, mobile and productive. Garston Vets’ on-farm services include ultrasound scanning, embryo transfer, surgical procedures, fertility testing and farmer training. Contact us for more info.

Foot Trimming Services

Regular foot trimming can improve animal mobility and prevent lameness in your herd. Book a mobility scoring session or lameness visit from one of our team. We work closely with Rob Todd, of Wessex Hoof Care, who will be happy to undertake your routine trimming needs. Contact us to book.

Dairy Herd Production Support

Garston Farm Vets are involved at all levels and scales of production and have set up herd health plans on most of our farms. We’re responsible for the care of a large number of herds in a 20-mile radius of our base in Frome. Data analysis of all our dairy herds using Total Vet or Interherd+ software enables us to keep up to date with all key performance indicators on your farm, ensuring the health, welfare and performance of your cattle.

Herd Health Planning

From housing and feeding to preventative vaccines, parasite control and disease screening, our Farm Vets can help you care for your herd and meet Red Tractor standards. Includes monthly, fortnightly, or weekly routine farm visits.

Flock Health Programs

We can help improve the overall health & welfare of your sheep flock by decreasing losses from disease, increasing productivity, benchmarking against the UK flock and amplifying profitability by identifying areas of potential improvement. All our flock health plans are to Red Tractor standards.

Farm Animal Parasite Control Plans

Garston’s Farm Vets can implement a comprehensive parasite control calendar for your farm, removing any stresses and ensuring key treatments are taken care of.

Nutritional Advice & Troubleshooting

Mastitis Investigations, Control & Recording

Lameness Control, Advice & Training

Utilise our Farm Vets’ training & specialist advice on lameness investigation and prevention to improve cow welfare and quality of life, increase milk yields and dairy economics. We are part of the AHDB Healthy Feet Program and have registered Mobility Mentors at the practice who are able to offer in-depth, farm-specific lameness investigations to target your areas of greatest opportunity. The Healthy Feet Program is performed over 3 weeks and includes:

  • One-to-one foot trimming training from the vet
  • Milking routine investigation
  • Feed barrier and water trough assessment
  • Cubicle and housing assessment

Pathology & Post Mortem Service

Our in-house post mortem service enables prompt detection of herd or flock issues, which allows for a punctual & targeted treatment plan to prevent further losses.

Dairy Herd Fertility Management & Recording

Monitoring fertility and identifying areas of improvement, including the selection of suitable replacements and breeding plans, can have huge impacts on the success and profitability of your herd. Bull Fertility Testing

Testing resident bulls and new arrivals for fertility potential should be done at least annually and around 4-6 weeks before service. Arrange a farm visit.

Youngstock Rearing Support & Monitoring

Receive our support & expert advice on effectively rearing youngstock including housing, nutrition, weaning, weighing, and dealing with health issues. Specialist Youngstock investigations and reports with bi-annual visits can help you maximise calf health.
